We chose the living room furniture mainly by price, style, and comfort
Our living room is on the small size for a living room but about average for the duplex style on our block. It has a strange layout that limits how you place the furniture.
One wall has sliding glass doors. Another is long enough to put almost anything against it. The third wall is fairly short due to the doorway leading into the hall to the bedrooms. And the forth “wall” won’t even fit a loveseat.
What I would suggest to anyone with these issues is to find a way to maximize the space you have in the room by using the furniture to define where the room starts and ends. We only rent and brought our furniture in with us, which consists of a love seat and a chair with an ottoman.
They are neutral colors in shades of browns in order to go with anything. We have 2 accent tables with a lamp that almost exactly matches the shades of browns that we do have. To add color, we’ve used an open bookcase filled with knickknacks and books as well as our wall coverings (clock, paintings, etc).
We chose the living room furniture mainly by price, style, and comfort. We know that these are not going to be long term pieces that will still be around when our kids are grown, but they work for now.
While we do like the furniture, there is clearly not enough seating. When we have any company come in at all, we have to use our computer chairs for added seating. I would recommend for first time buyers to assess what the function of the furniture will be.
Do you plan on living in your home for a while or moving?
Do you have the money now or can you get cute 2nd hand pieces for a bargain until you get better ones later?
Are you planning on remodeling?
I suggest figuring out what your plan is and then buying furniture for that amount of time.
Ours is temporary but completely livable. So we went with neutrals that can work in almost any environment. If we owned a house (especially if it had enough rooms to comfortably fit our growing family), I would figure out how I want to shape the room instead of buying necessary things.
Comfort and quality would be primary for us.
